Suspend Patently Unlawful Pay Rise For Politicians – SERAP Tells President Tinubu

Rights group, SERAP, has called on President Bola Tinubu to direct the RMAFC to suspend the planned pay rise for political office holders in Nigeria. The RMAFC Chairman had hinted at a review of salaries, stating that the current pay was inadequate.

SERAP argued that the proposed increase was unconstitutional and not in the public interest, especially when millions of Nigerians are living in poverty. They urged the President to reject the pay rise and ensure compliance with a court judgment to review salaries downwards.

SERAP emphasized that the RMAFC should prioritize the welfare of the marginalized population over the interests of political office holders. Failure to suspend the pay rise could lead to legal action.

The group highlighted the need to uphold the principles of equality and fairness in a representative democracy.
