NLC and TUC Threaten Nationwide Shutdown Over Insecurity

On Thursday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) issued a grave warning regarding Nigeria's escalating insecurity and economic hardships, declaring the country is nearing a breaking point. During a joint address at Eagle Square in Abuja, leaders Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo criticized political leaders for failing ordinary Nigerians and highlighted the collapse of the social contract.

They warned that workers might soon be advised to stay home due to unchecked insecurity, which they described as unsustainable. The unions pointed out that nearly 65% of Nigerians live below the poverty line, with thousands falling into poverty daily.

They announced that negotiations for a new national minimum wage would commence in July 2026 and demanded immediate measures to cushion economic hardships. The unions also condemned the disconnect between political leaders and the realities faced by ordinary citizens, emphasizing the need for collective action as the 2027 general elections approach.
