NLC, TUC Threaten Nationwide Strike Over Insecurity

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have issued a warning of a potential nationwide strike in response to the worsening security situation across Nigeria. NLC President Joe Ajaero made this disclosure on Monday while speaking at the ongoing International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

He stated that Nigerian workers can no longer endure daily activities under the constant threat of kidnapping, bandit attacks, and violent crime, highlighting that safety has become a major issue. Ajaero stressed that the deteriorating security affects productivity across various sectors of the economy and that the government must prioritize the protection of citizens' lives.

Additionally, the NLC and TUC called for the federal government to initiate a renegotiation of the national minimum wage, arguing that the current economic realities and rising cost of living necessitate a wage review. They emphasized that workers deserve a living wage that meets their basic needs, especially amid ongoing inflation pressures.
