NMDPRA Launches Revised Gas Code to Boost Trade Efficiency

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) launched Revision 2 of the Nigerian Gas Transportation Network Code on Monday in Lagos. The event took place during the 20th edition of OTL Africa Downstream Energy Week 2026.
NMDPRA's chief executive, Rabiu Umar, stated that the revised code aims to strengthen gas transportation regulations, enhance market efficiency, and facilitate trade. The new code clarifies rules for gas measurement, nominations, and transportation, promoting transparency and coordination among network users.
Since the introduction of Revision 1, participation in the gas transportation network has increased, with a reported 30 percent decline in imbalances on the western gas network. Olu Verheijen, special adviser to the President on Energy, emphasized the importance of regulatory certainty and investment in gas infrastructure.
Dr Mumuni Dagazau, Executive Vice-President of Downstream at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd., highlighted the need for improved coordination among industry stakeholders. Tunji Oyebanji, Chairman of the OTL Africa Downstream Advisory Board, stressed the significance of infrastructure development for energy markets.
