NNPC to Launch 70 Smart Self-Service Stations Nationwide

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has announced plans to deploy between 50 and 70 smart, self-service filling stations across Nigeria within the next six months. This initiative was disclosed by Mumuni Dagazau, the Executive Vice President, Downstream, during the unveiling of a smart mega station in Abuja.

The upgraded stations will offer various energy and mobility services, including petrol, electric vehicle charging, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and compressed natural gas (CNG). Dagazau stated, “We are hoping to roll out a significant number, probably about 50 to 70 of these types of stations within the next six months.” This rollout signifies a shift towards greater automation in NNPC’s retail operations, allowing customers to access fuel and services through smart facilities.

However, concerns have been raised regarding the potential impact on employment, particularly for petrol station attendants. The transition to automated stations may necessitate retraining and redeployment measures for affected workers, as Nigeria faces significant employment challenges.
