Senate Investigates ₦210 Trillion NNPCL Financial Discrepancy

The Nigerian Senate, under the leadership of Senator Aliyu Wadada, is scrutinizing a significant financial discrepancy of ₦210 trillion in the audit reports of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) covering the years 2017 to 2023. The Senate's Public Accounts Committee has flagged this issue, which broadly divides into ₦103 trillion in accrued expenses and ₦107 trillion in receipts, citing a lack of adequate supporting documentation.

The Senate has rejected NNPCL's written explanations as insufficient and evasive, demanding a credible justification for the funds. A public hearing is scheduled for November 2025, where the Senate may direct NNPCL to refund the ₦210 trillion unless satisfactory explanations are provided.

The ongoing inquiry highlights structural weaknesses in Nigeria's financial oversight and the challenges in enforcing compliance with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) of 2021, which mandates transparency and accountability in the oil sector.
