FUTA SSANU Declares Strike If Salary Talks Fail by April 30

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has announced a strike scheduled to commence on April 30, 2023, if the federal government does not conclude negotiations regarding a 30% salary increase for non-academic staff. Felix Adumbi, the FUTA branch chairman, emphasized that there would be no retreat from the April 30 deadline unless negotiations on welfare and emoluments, which began in 2022, are finalized.

The association rejected a controversial circular issued by the federal government that purportedly approved the salary increment, stating it was not a product of the ongoing negotiations. SSANU has given the government an ultimatum to conclude these negotiations by April 30, warning that failure to do so could lead to a nationwide shutdown of public universities.

The last meeting with the government did not yield a conclusive agreement, prompting the union to reiterate its demands for urgent action.
