Falana Opposes Electricity Tariff Hike Without Service Improvement

Femi Falana, a senior advocate in Nigeria, expressed strong opposition to the proposed increase in electricity tariffs by power distribution companies, stating that there is no justification for such a hike without demonstrable improvements in service quality. During an appearance on Channels Television's Politics Today program, Falana criticized both the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) administrations for their handling of the power sector.

He noted that despite the privatization of 18 electricity companies, the government has continued to inject trillions of naira into the sector with little visible benefit to consumers. Falana referenced former Minister Dr.

Usman Shamsudeen's claim that the electricity companies were sold to friends, further emphasizing the lack of accountability. He warned that any tariff increase without service improvement would violate the Electric Power Sector Reform Act.

Falana highlighted the ongoing hardships faced by Nigerians, including erratic supply and frequent outages, despite previous tariff hikes.
