Falana Critiques Electricity Tariff Hikes Amid Poor Supply

Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, criticized the recent hikes in electricity tariffs in Nigeria during an interview on a television program. He pointed out that electricity distribution companies have repeatedly increased tariffs despite failing to deliver adequate services to citizens.

Falana expressed concern over the worsening power supply situation in the country and accused the electricity distribution companies of shortchanging Nigerians. He noted that significant public funds continue to be injected into the power sector without yielding expected improvements.

Falana referred to the privatization of the power sector, which involved the sale of 18 electricity companies during the administration of former President Jonathan, and emphasized that the current situation remains dire. He questioned how electricity companies could justify further tariff increases when service delivery has not improved.
