No Law for Proposed Petrol Tax in January 2026, TUC Threatens Nationwide Resistance

Taiwo Oyedele, the chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy Tax Reforms Committee, refuted reports of a proposed 5% tax on petroleum products starting in January 2026. The Nigeria Trade Union Congress (TUC) rejected the tax, calling it economically reckless and burdensome for citizens.

Oyedele clarified that there is no law mandating the implementation of this tax in January 2026. The TUC threatened nationwide resistance if the government proceeds with the tax plan, emphasizing the negative impact it could have on the already overburdened population.

Oyedele pointed out that the decision to introduce such a tax would require new legislation and a future commencement date.
