Noah Okafor quits Switzerland over trust issues with coach

Noah Okafor, a forward for Leeds United, has declared his intention to cease representing the Switzerland national team under coach Murat Yakin, citing a breakdown in trust with the manager. The 26-year-old player, who has made 26 appearances for Switzerland since his debut in 2019, stated that his decision was not influenced by his limited playing time, having only played 19 minutes during the World Cup.

In an Instagram statement, Okafor expressed that his decision stemmed from feelings of being mistreated by the national team's current leadership, mentioning that commitments were not upheld and that he was deeply hurt by the criticism following his performance against Algeria. He confirmed that he no longer wishes to play for Switzerland under Yakin.

The Swiss Football Association acknowledged his decision and expressed respect for it. Switzerland's next match in the 2026-27 Nations League is scheduled against North Macedonia on September 26.

Okafor joined Leeds United from AC Milan in August 2025 for £18 million.
