North-East Nigeria Sees 1,934 IED Incidents Since 2017

According to a report from the Nigeria Mine Action Review, North-East Nigeria has experienced 1,934 incidents involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs) from 2017 to 2024. The data indicates that road-emplaced IEDs accounted for the majority of these attacks, significantly outnumbering body-borne and vehicle-borne incidents.

The year 2017 recorded the highest number of attacks at 381, including 165 road-emplaced IEDs. The total number of incidents fluctuated over the years, with 267 in 2018, 189 in 2019, and a rise to 281 in 2021.

The report highlights that the region remains a persistent security risk due to the evolving tactics of terrorist groups, particularly in the North-East and North-West. Major General Adamu Laka, coordinating a counter-IED workshop in Abuja, emphasized the ongoing threat posed to security forces and civilians, as insurgents continuously adapt their methods for detonating explosives.
