Nigeria Revenue Service Launches Unified Tax ID System

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has announced the implementation of a unified Tax ID system for all taxable persons in Nigeria, as per a public notice issued on Monday. This initiative is in line with sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA) 2025, which mandates that every taxable person in the country obtain a Tax ID.

The new system is part of a broader effort to strengthen tax administration, improve transparency, and enhance service delivery within Nigeria's tax ecosystem. The NRS highlighted several benefits expected from the new Tax ID system, including simplified tax compliance processes, improved visibility for tracking taxpayer records, and reduced leakage in tax collection.

The new Tax ID will replace the existing Tax Identification Number (TIN) and will be valid for all tax-related transactions. Organizations are required to integrate the new Tax ID into their systems, with the framework harmonizing taxpayer information across various levels of government.

The new system is set to take effect in January 2026.
