NSCDC Arrests 671 Suspected Illegal Miners Nationwide

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 671 suspected illegal miners across the country, with 397 of them already arraigned in a federal high court in Abuja. This operation, led by Mine Marshal Attah Onoja, is part of a renewed enforcement campaign to improve compliance with mining regulations and combat illegal mining activities.

The initiative is expected to significantly increase government revenue from the solid minerals sector, projected to rise from ₦6 billion in 2023 to ₦70 billion by June 2026. The NSCDC's efforts are supported by various stakeholders, including the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr.

Dele Alak, and the Nigerian Union of Mine Workers. Challenges such as inadequate logistics and judicial delays were identified, prompting calls for increased budgetary allocations and technological advancements to enhance surveillance and enforcement.

The initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu's agenda to boost the mining sector and create jobs while reducing criminal activities.
