NSCDC Warns Against Fiber Optic Cable Destruction in A’Ibom

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has cautioned against the destruction of fiber optic cables in Akwa Ibom, as stated by Commandant Geraldine Abetianb during a press briefing in Uyo on Tuesday. Abetianb classified these telecommunications cables as critical national infrastructure, warning that any damage, whether deliberate or negligent, constitutes a serious offense with national security implications.

She urged mining and road construction companies to be vigilant and to liaise with relevant authorities to avoid damaging these installations. The NSCDC emphasized that ignorance of the presence of fiber optic cables during excavation or construction activities will lead to immediate detention and prosecution under existing laws.

This warning comes in response to an increase in disruptions to telecommunications services in the state, which threaten global communication and economic systems. Abetianb also encouraged the public and stakeholders to report any suspicious excavation activities that could harm this vital infrastructure.
