NSCDC Takes Action to Safeguard Fibre Optic Infrastructure

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Anambra State Command, led by Maku Olatund, convened a strategic engagement meeting with construction companies and stakeholders to address the rising incidents of damage to fibre optic cables during road construction across the state. The meeting, held at the NSCDC state command headquarters in Awka, was in compliance with directives from the national headquarters of the NSCDC.

Olatund highlighted the critical classification of telecommunications fibre infrastructure as essential national information infrastructure for 2024. He warned that negligence leading to damage will no longer be tolerated and emphasized the importance of regulatory compliance.

The NSCDC stressed that unauthorized excavation activities without proper verification of underground facilities pose serious threats to public safety and economic stability. Any individuals found culpable of damaging fibre optic cables will face prosecution under existing laws.

Engr. Dr. Opara Emeka, representing the Federal Ministry of Works, attended the meeting, which was deemed vital for building resilience in the telecommunications sector.
