NSDC Launches Training to Boost Sugar Production Target

The Nigeria Sugar Development Council (NSDC) is intensifying its efforts to achieve a target of 2 million metric tonnes of sugar production annually. The council has launched a training program aimed at developing a skilled workforce capable of transforming the industry.

This initiative is part of the Nigeria Sugar Master Plan (NSMP) and includes a residential training program that commenced on June 29 and concluded on July 3, 2026, with a second cohort scheduled to begin on July 13, 2026. Kamar Bakrin, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of NSDC, emphasized the importance of specialized professionals to drive efficiency across the sugar value chain.

The program aims to address the technical talent deficit in the sector and includes practical training on sugarcane biology, water management, and yield optimization. Major industry players, including Dangote's Adamawa Sugar Company and BUA's Lafiagi Sugar Company, are directly involved in this initiative, which seeks to eliminate import dependence and enhance the economic viability of Nigeria's sugar sector.
