NUP President Warns of Union Fragmentation Threat

The National Union of Pensioners (NUP) is reportedly on the verge of balkanization, prompting President Godwin Abumisi to raise an alarm during a press briefing following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja. Abumisi described the situation as grave, attributing it to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment's recent registration of a parallel body for retirees, which he claims violates the Trade Union Act.

He emphasized that this action threatens the unity and solidarity of the union, which has been established for decades. Abumisi called for a rescue mission to safeguard the integrity of the NUP and prevent both internal and external crises.

He reaffirmed the union's commitment to cooperating with the government, particularly under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, while cautioning that divisive actions must not be allowed to persist. Abumisi urged union leaders to remain united and focus on their mission to strengthen the NUP.
