NUP Urges Tinubu to Prevent Union Balkanization

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), led by President Godwin Abumisi, has urgently appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in what they describe as attempts to balkanize the union. During an emergency meeting of the union's National Executive Council (NEC) in Abuja, Abumisi raised concerns over the recent registration of new retiree bodies by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, which he claims violates extant labor laws and threatens the unity of pensioners nationwide.

He emphasized that the ministry's actions contravene the Trade Union Act and could destabilize the union's solidarity. Abumisi urged Tinubu to act swiftly to safeguard the legal integrity of the union, while also acknowledging the government's ongoing pension sector reforms.

He noted the recent release of N58 billion for the defined benefit scheme and N758 billion for pension contributors, which he commended. However, he warned that continued violations of labor laws could undermine the union's unity and urged members to remain focused and united against divisive tendencies.
