Nigeria to Replace NYSC Khaki with Adire Uniforms

The Nigerian government, through the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodel Olawande, announced plans to replace the khaki uniform worn by National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members with Adire fabric. This initiative aims to revive Nigeria's textile industry, create jobs, and encourage spending within the local economy.

Adire production is already underway in several states, including Ogun and Kwara. The government intends to align corps members' postings with their academic qualifications and regional familiarity, particularly considering security concerns in certain areas, such as the North East.

The proposal also seeks to reduce the number of redeployment requests from corps members. The Federal Executive Council approved a comprehensive review of the NYSC on Monday, marking the first major overhaul of the scheme since its establishment in 1973.

The reforms will amend the NYSC Act to accommodate the new framework while ensuring that the military continues to provide security support for corps members across the country.
