Obey Supreme Court delineation order, Warri groups urge INEC

Warri groups representing the Indigenous Ijaw and Urhobo people in the Warri Federal Constituency are urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to obey a Supreme Court order for the release and implementation of a fresh delineation report for electoral wards in Warri. The groups accused INEC of contempt of court and undermining democracy by proceeding with the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise without completing the delineation process.

The Supreme Court had ordered INEC to conduct a fresh delineation of electoral wards and polling units in Warri, citing flaws in the existing wards. Despite convening stakeholder meetings and presenting a draft report, INEC has not yet published the final report, rendering the voter registration exercise futile.

The groups emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and accused INEC of compromising its independence. Prominent community leaders endorsed the groups' statement at a press conference, highlighting the need to protect the democratic rights of indigenous voters in the region.
