Usman: Obi Cannot Rejoin Labour Party for 2027 Election

Senator Nenadi Usman, the interim national chairman of the Labour Party, clarified in an ARIS TV interview that Peter Obi cannot rejoin the Labour Party to contest the 2027 presidential election. Usman cited the strict membership registration deadlines outlined in the Electoral Act, noting that the party's registration closed 21 days before the primary submission to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

She emphasized that once the registration is closed, it is legally impossible for anyone to contest the elections under the party's platform. Usman acknowledged Obi's significant role in the party's 2023 presidential campaign and mentioned that she had previously persuaded him to defect from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the Labour Party.

She expressed that the Labour Party is now convinced that it is not just a party for the people but also a fair platform for political engagement.
