FIFA Rejects NFF Petition on DR Congo Player Eligibility

FIFA has dismissed the Nigeria Football Federation's (NFF) petition concerning the eligibility of certain players from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) during the 2026 FIFA World Cup inter-confederation playoffs. The match, held in Rabat, Morocco, ended with Nigeria losing 4-3 on penalties, prompting the NFF to lodge a formal protest.

The NFF cited irregularities in the issuance of passports that allowed DR Congo players to participate. However, FIFA's disciplinary committee confirmed DR Congo's progression to the next stage of the playoffs.

NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi announced the decision on Tuesday and stated that the federation would immediately launch an appeal, as they found the committee's decision unsatisfactory.

DR Congo will now face the winner of the playoff between Jamaica and New Caledonia for a final spot in the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, from June 11 to July 19. The outcome of Nigeria's appeal could influence the final tournament lineup and reignite discussions on player eligibility in World Cup qualifiers.
