Nigeria's World Cup Fate Rests on FIFA's Decision

Nigeria's aspirations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are currently in the hands of FIFA, as stated by Dikko, the chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC). During a press meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, Dikko expressed optimism about the Super Eagles' chances of reinstatement into the intercontinental playoff scheduled for March.

This optimism follows Nigeria's loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the African playoff final, which ended their qualification campaign. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has submitted a formal protest to FIFA, alleging that the Democratic Republic of Congo fielded an ineligible player during the playoff match.

Dikko emphasized that the matter remains unresolved and that the NFF is considering challenging FIFA's decision through the Court of Arbitration for Sport if necessary. As of now, FIFA has yet to issue an official decision regarding the protest.
