Nigerian Athletes Shine in 400m Finals at Commonwealth Games

At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, Nigerian athletes Samuel Ogazi, Ella Onojuvwevwo, and Edidiong Udo have successfully qualified for the men’s and women’s 400m finals. Samuel Ogazi, the 2026 world leader and reigning NCAA champion, won the first men’s semi-final with a time of 44.52 seconds, showcasing his strong medal potential.

Edidiong Udo secured his spot in the final by finishing second in the third semi-final with a time of 45.55 seconds. Initially, Udo placed third behind Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards and Jamaica’s Antonio Watson, but Watson's disqualification allowed Udo to advance.

Udo's time was also among the fastest non-automatic qualifiers. In the women's 400m, Ella Onojuvwevwo continued her strong performance by winning her semi-final in 51.47 seconds, securing automatic qualification.

She recorded the second-fastest time overall, just behind Jamaica’s Dejanea Oakley. Defending champion Sada Williams of Barbados also advanced, and British athlete Yemi John, of Nigerian descent, will be a contender in the final.
