Ogun State Launches Five Million Tree Planting Initiative

Ogun State has launched an ambitious initiative to plant five million trees as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and bolster the state's economy. The plan was unveiled by Governor Dapo Abiodun during an event in Abeokuta, coinciding with International Day of Forests.

Taiwo Oludotun, the Commissioner for Forestry, highlighted the importance of forests in supporting global and national economies, generating employment, and providing essential resources. He lamented that despite the significant economic, social, and environmental contributions of forests, they are often undervalued in economic planning.

The initiative aims to combat illegal tree felling and enhance forest cover, which is crucial for air purification, erosion control, and providing resources necessary for human survival during economic shocks and climate-related disasters. Kehind Onasanya, Ogun State Head of Service, emphasized the health and economic benefits of trees and urged residents to avoid illegal logging.

Dr. Oyesanwen Adekunl and Olukoya Ikujeyo also stressed the dangers of a treeless environment and called for community involvement in tree planting.
