DSS Transformation Under Oluwatosin Ajayi: A New Era

Oluwatosin Ajayi, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), has led a significant transformation of Nigeria’s premier domestic intelligence agency as it marks its 40th anniversary. Over the past two years, Ajayi has shifted the DSS from an organization known for arbitrary arrests and violations of press freedom to one that emphasizes restorative justice and human rights compliance.

Under his leadership, the agency has paid over N300 million in compensation to victims of operational errors and has secured multiple death sentences and life imprisonments for terror suspects. His reforms focus on five pillars: law enforcement, inter-agency synergy, accountability, respect for human rights, and infrastructure modernization.

Ajayi has also improved cooperation with the media and other agencies, reflecting a commitment to transparency. He has noted that his approach builds on past successes while addressing weaknesses, aiming to balance operational effectiveness with democratic accountability.
