Omokri Says Tinubu Not Target of FBI Probe Into Connected Individuals

Nigeria's ambassador-designate acknowledges FBI investigation involving people linked to President Tinubu but says the president himself was not under scrutiny.
Reno Omokri, Nigeria's designated ambassador to Mexico, has confirmed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted an examination involving associates of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while emphasizing that Tinubu himself did not face direct investigation. Speaking on a Sunday broadcast of Channels Television's Politics Today programme, Omokri sought to clarify what he characterized as public misunderstanding regarding decades-old U.S. law enforcement records connected to the president.
According to Omokri's account, the FBI's focus centered on other individuals whose financial holdings attracted official attention. Tinubu's connection to the matter stemmed from his work managing client assets in a professional accounting capacity, Omokri stated.
The ambassador-designate argued that this distinction—between being the subject of an investigation and being peripherally involved through financial arrangements—represented a crucial clarification in ongoing public debate. Omokri further contended that Tinubu maintains no criminal record with the FBI.
He characterized the federal records that do exist as routine documentation collected during standard background procedures, including fingerprints, DNA information, and blood group details. Omokri noted that such records are generated whenever individuals interact with U.S. government institutions or submit to background vetting processes, suggesting these materials do not inherently indicate wrongdoing.
Regarding Tinubu's decision not to publicly release these records, Omokri explained that the documents contain sensitive personal information that the president has chosen not to disclose. The ambassador-designate rejected characterizations of the records as mysterious or indicative of hidden misconduct, instead framing them as routine administrative materials containing private details that individuals typically guard regardless of criminal history.
These explanations come amid renewed scrutiny of historical investigative records dating back to the 1990s.
