On October 22, the Senate called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene to save Aiyetoro community in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State from severe sea incursion that has consumed 80% of buildings. Senator Dayo Faduyile sponsored the motion highlighting the threat to lives, livelihoods, public infrastructure, and cultural heritage.
The Senate urged collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Environment, the Niger Delta Development Commission, and the Ondo State Government to implement a comprehensive shoreline protection program. They also called for a review of previous shoreline protection contracts to address delays.
The lawmakers emphasized the need for budgetary provisions and international climate adaptation financing for sustainable coastal protection and restoration of community infrastructure. Additionally, they requested immediate humanitarian assistance from the National Emergency Management Agency for residents affected by the advancing ocean.
