Ondo State Celebrates 50 Years of Rich History

Ondo State, established on February 3, 1976, will mark its 50th anniversary in 2026. The state was created under the military regime of General Murtala Muhammed.

The Ondo State Government is organizing modest celebrations, including a public lecture that brings together members of the elite and intelligentsia to reflect on the state's journey and future aspirations. Historically, Ondo State is notable for being home to Nigeria's first skyscraper, Cocoa House, built in 1979, and for the discovery of oil in Araromi in 1908, with commercial exploration commencing in 1968.

In 1992, Ondo was recognized as an oil-producing state, currently producing 60,000 barrels per day, making it the fifth-largest oil producer in Nigeria. The state also has the second-largest bitumen deposit globally and a long coastline, which supports plans for a deep-sea port.

Despite challenges, Ondo State has prioritized education, reflecting its commitment to human capital development.
