Edo Governor Okpebholo Appoints 4,800 Special Assistants

Governor Lucky Okpebholo of Edo State appointed 4,800 special assistants as part of efforts to deepen the participation of All Progressives Congress (APC) members in his administration. Okpebholo justified the decision by stating, “We don’t have any other party than APC,” emphasizing the need for grassroots governance.

However, this appointment has raised critical public interest questions, including whether the costs are included in the Edo State budget for 2026 and the lack of adherence to Section 196, sub 4 of the 1999 Constitution regarding appointment procedures. Concerns were also raised about the state’s financial resources, especially since many retired workers are owed pensions and gratuities.

Critics argue that the funds used for these appointments could be better spent on social services and infrastructure. Okpebholo's predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, had appointed 186 special and senior special assistants, leading to questions about the necessity of such a large increase in aides under the current administration.
