Opeifa Advocates for Enhanced Railway Security in Nigeria

Dr. Kayode Opeifa, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), has called for stronger railway security and the modernization of Nigeria's rail system.

Speaking on a television program, he emphasized the need for collaboration between state governments and the railway police to enhance the protection of railway infrastructure across the country. Opeifa disclosed that the railway police currently operate across 26 states and stressed the importance of state governments in the security architecture to support the protection of railway infrastructure.

He described the railway as a critical national asset that plays an important role in national development. Opeifa also highlighted the historical context of the Nigerian railway system, noting that significant modernization efforts began in 2015 with the introduction of standard gauge rail lines under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He mentioned key projects such as the Abuja-Kaduna railway and the Warri-Itakpe railway, as well as the Abuja rail mass transit and the Lagos-Ibadan railway initiatives.
