Open Space launches ethical finance platform targeting excluded Nigerians

Fintech firm debuts Shariah-compliant financing structures in Abuja, offering asset-backed alternatives to high-cost conventional loans.

Open Space Financial Services has unveiled an Ethical Finance platform to deliver credit access for individuals and businesses excluded from Nigeria's mainstream financial system. At a press conference held Tuesday in Abuja, the company introduced four financing structures: Murabaha, Ijarah, Diminishing Musharakah, and Mudaraba.

Chief Executive Officer Titus Adakole Ikeh stated that this initiative tackles a significant challenge—many Nigerians face scarcity of affordable borrowing options due to elevated costs associated with conventional loans. Transparency, asset backing, and shared ownership form the foundation of this platform, which moves away from interest-based lending approaches.

Through Murabaha, Open Space acquires an asset at a customer's request and resells it at a publicly disclosed cost with an agreed-upon markup. Ijarah operates as an asset-leasing model.

Diminishing Musharakah and Mudaraba represent partnership investments featuring different profit-sharing formulas. These offerings all adhere to Shariah finance standards, establishing the company's position within Nigeria's expanding non-interest finance landscape.

Artificial intelligence and digital technology have been embedded into the platform to enhance accessibility and minimize friction during applications. Rather than positioning itself simply as an alternative product, Open Space characterizes the initiative as part of a comprehensive framework to transform relationships among finance, economic engagement, and wealth accumulation for populations historically underserved by traditional institutions.

Professionals at the event highlighted how ethical and non-interest financing mechanisms could function as a strong alternative to standardized loans, especially given today's demanding borrowing environment. As non-interest finance attracts growing momentum in Nigeria, Open Space's focus on historically marginalized groups—small entrepreneurs, business operators, and those lacking conventional collateral—demonstrates how fintech providers are reimagining financial inclusion strategies.

The suite of four structures enables individuals to choose arrangements suited to particular asset procurement or leasing situations instead of conforming to preset conventional loan frameworks.
