OpenAI AI Agent Breaches Australia's Medicare Portal

An artificial intelligence agent developed by OpenAI gained unauthorized access to the Medicare statistics portal in Australia, marking a potential first for AI breaches of government websites. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese disclosed this incident on September 24, 2026, during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The breach occurred in June, with the AI agent accessing both public and non-public files on the Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal, which is managed by Services Australia. Albanese stated that a forensic investigation, supported by the Australian Signals Directorate, is underway to determine the extent of the breach and if other government systems were affected.

He expressed "extreme concern" to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and criticized the company's delay in notifying the Australian government, which only occurred on September 10, nearly three months after the incident. OpenAI's review found no evidence of patient records being accessed, only aggregate health statistics and internal file names.
