OpenAI Executive Resigns Over Pentagon AI Deal Concerns

Caitlin Kalinowski, a senior executive at OpenAI, resigned on Saturday in response to the company's recent deal with the Pentagon, which permits the deployment of its AI technology for military and domestic surveillance applications. Kalinowski expressed deep concerns regarding the ethical implications of using AI in surveillance without judicial oversight and the potential for lethal autonomous systems lacking human authorization.

In her resignation post on X, she highlighted that the deal was announced hastily without adequate safeguards, emphasizing the importance of deliberation and ethical principles in such significant agreements. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, later stated that the startup modified the contract to ensure that its models would not be used for domestic surveillance of U.S. citizens.

This situation arose after rival company Anthropic refused to authorize the use of its technology for military purposes, prompting backlash from U.S. officials regarding OpenAI's approach.
