Egbin Power Station Faces Total Shutdown, 641 MW Loss

On April 28, 2026, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) reported a significant operational disturbance at Egbin Power Station, resulting in a complete loss of power generation. The output dropped by approximately 641 MW, leading to zero generation at 8:21 PM.

The incident was attributed to a failure of the plant's central compressor and a malfunctioning circulating water pump system, necessitating an emergency shutdown of the unit. Consequently, power supply to the Lagos region was restricted due to a forced outage on the Osogbo-Ikeja West 330kV line, further constraining the delivery of available generation to the Lagos load center.

This situation created a significant supply shortfall, prompting immediate load shedding measures to maintain grid stability and prevent wider system disturbances. NISO acknowledged the inconvenience caused to electricity consumers, particularly in the Lagos area, and assured stakeholders that efforts were underway to resolve the situation as soon as possible.
