NISO Reports 180MW Power Loss Due to Electricity Theft

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has raised an alarm regarding significant electricity theft along the Ikorodu-Sagamu transmission corridor, resulting in a loss of 180 megawatts. Abdu Mohammed Bello, NISO's Managing Director, disclosed this information during a stakeholder meeting, highlighting the severe impact of electricity theft on the stability of the national grid and market revenues.

The investigation revealed extensive meter manipulation and unauthorized connections involving major customers linked to Ikeja Electric Distribution Company and Ibadan Electric Distribution Company. Bello indicated that the magnitude of the theft is alarming, prompting NISO to consult with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to address the issue.

A pilot scheme will be implemented to combat electricity theft nationwide, starting with the Ikorodu-Sagamu line. NISO has mandated immediate recalibration of meters and installation of check meters at all interface points to ensure compliance.

Failure to comply may result in financial penalties and disconnection from the national grid.
