Orient Petroleum MD Sentenced to 14 Years for Fraud

Engin Nnaemeka Nwawka, the Managing Director of Orient Petroleum Resources PLC, and Sage Nebefeif were sentenced to 14 years in prison by an Anambra State High Court for their involvement in a N25 billion fraud scheme. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) issued a statement on Friday detailing the conviction, which stemmed from allegations that Nwawka awarded suspicious contracts to friends' companies, allowing them to siphon funds back to the Sage Nebefeif Foundation.

Upon arraignment, both defendants pleaded not guilty, prompting a full trial led by EFCC counsel Victor Ukagwu. Over the last ten years, the EFCC called four witnesses and presented several documentary evidence during the trial.

The court's decision was influenced by the evidence and the defendants' handling of the contracts. The EFCC has been active in recovering assets linked to financial crimes, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu highlighting the agency's achievements in a recent address.
