APIN Public Health Initiatives Marks 25 Years in Nigeria

APIN Public Health Initiatives, established in 2001, has evolved into a significant entity in Nigeria's public health landscape, particularly in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Dr.

Jai Osi Samuel, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, highlighted the organization's journey during its 25th anniversary. APIN originated from a project at the Harvard School of Public Health, focusing on HIV prevention in Nigeria, which was crucial as the country faced a rising HIV prevalence exceeding five percent.

The organization received a $25 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to implement molecular epidemiology studies and community prevention efforts in Lagos, Plateau, and Oyo states. In 2004, APIN became part of the U.S.

President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which significantly bolstered its treatment programs. Currently, APIN supports approximately 1.7 million people receiving HIV treatment, aiming to achieve the 95-95-95 targets for HIV management.

The organization operates in five states and supports 443 health facilities, employing around 4,000 individuals.
