EFCC's Account Freeze Supported Amid Tinubu's Directive

The Centre for Public Accountability, Rule of Law and Transparency Initiative, led by Dr. Raymond Chukwuebuka Ndukwe, has expressed support for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding its restriction of an account belonging to the Osun State Government.

This stance comes in response to President Bola Tinubu's directive questioning the timing of the EFCC's actions, despite acknowledging its authority under a court order. The group argues that the timing of anti-corruption investigations should not hinder the EFCC from fulfilling its constitutional duties.

They cited previous instances where the EFCC restricted state government accounts, including cases in Benue State in 2018, Kogi State during former Governor Yahaya Bello's second term, and Edo State in 2025. The group referenced the 1999 Constitution and the EFCC’s enabling laws, asserting the commission's mandate to investigate financial crimes, including misappropriation of public funds.

They also highlighted relevant provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, supporting the EFCC's actions.
