EFCC Account Restriction Supported Amid Political Concerns

The Centre for Public Accountability, Rule of Law and Transparency Initiative, led by Dr. Raymond Chukwuebuka Ndukwe, has expressed support for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding its restriction of an account belonging to the Osun State Government.

The organization criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's reported directive to lift the court order associated with this restriction. The Centre stated that the EFCC should be allowed to perform its statutory duties without political interference, regardless of the timing of investigations.

They noted that the EFCC's mandate includes investigating economic and financial crimes, which should not be influenced by political considerations. The Centre claimed that the EFCC had begun investigations into the Osun State Government prior to the account restriction and alleged that significant withdrawals were made from state accounts shortly before the restriction.

They argued that the restriction was a necessary measure to preserve public funds pending the investigation's outcome, although these allegations have yet to be established by a court.
