EFCC Account Restriction: Support from Public Accountability Group

The Centre for Public Accountability, Rule of Law and Transparency Initiative, led by Dr. Raymond Chukwuebuka Ndukwe, has expressed support for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding its restriction of an account belonging to the Osun State Government.

The organization criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's reported directive to lift the court order associated with this restriction. The Centre stated that the EFCC should operate without political interference and emphasized that concerns about the timing of investigations should not hinder the commission's lawful duties.

The group noted that the EFCC's mandate includes investigating economic and financial crimes, which should not be influenced by political considerations. They referenced previous instances of account restrictions involving state governments, including Benue State in 2018, Kogi State during former Governor Yahaya Bello's second term, and Edo State in 2025.

The Centre claimed that the EFCC had begun investigations into the Osun State Government prior to the account restriction and alleged significant withdrawals from state accounts between August 3 and 4, 2026, raising concerns about public fund dissipation.
