Tensions Rise Ahead of Osun State Governorship Election

The upcoming governorship election in Osun State, scheduled for August 15, 2026, has generated unprecedented tension, reminiscent of the political climate before the 2011 elections. Governor Ademola Adeleke, representing the Accord political party, has raised concerns about the state's political environment, citing real threats of violence, arrests, and intimidation.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), led by candidate Asiwaju Munirdeen Bola Oyebamiji, has countered these claims, asserting that they faced significant violence during the previous election cycle. The APC's loss in this election could negatively impact its ambitions in the South West region.

Both parties have exchanged accusations regarding infrastructure development, with the APC claiming that projects are substandard and concentrated in two local governments. The Adeleke administration has defended its record, asserting that projects are executed by qualified engineers and adhere to global standards.

Additionally, allegations have surfaced regarding the relocation of Ido Osun Airport, which the state government has denied as politically motivated.
