Tensions Rise Ahead of Osun State Governorship Election

The Osun State governorship election has been characterized by rising political tension, inflammatory rhetoric, and threats of violence, with 29 lives lost in over 73 poll-related incidents from May to July. The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the ruling Accord Party (AP) are in conflict, each alleging the other is responsible for pre-election violence.

Incumbent governor Senator Ademola Adeleke is seeking a second term on the AP platform, defending his administration's performance and urging supporters to protect their votes. Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji of the APC, backed by Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, aims to reclaim the state for the ruling party.

Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Party (ADC) is also a contender, presenting himself as a viable alternative to the two leading parties. Dr Francis Olugbenga Ajala of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) is included in the race, with his name added to the ballot following a court order.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured voters of the availability of additional BVAS machines for smooth accreditation.
