Otedola Bridge Crash on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Raises Safety Concerns

On September 16, 2026, a serious traffic incident occurred on Otedola Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, outbound Lagos. Five vehicles, including a containerised truck and a loaded trailer, were involved in a violent chain of collisions.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) reported that a containerised truck developed a mechanical fault, lost control, and collided with three vehicles, leading to another truck crashing into the wreckage. Rescuers worked to free one victim trapped in a mangled vehicle, and five people were rescued alive without any fatalities recorded.

LASEMA's response team arrived approximately 10 minutes after the distress call, with assistance from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the police, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and ambulance personnel. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing safety concerns at Otedola Bridge, which has a history of crashes, and emphasizes the need for decisive government action to enhance road safety.
