NECO Celebrates 25 Years with 35 Million Candidates

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has reported that over 35 million candidates have participated in its examinations since its establishment on July 10, 1999. This disclosure was made by Professor Dantani Wushishi, the Registrar and Chief Executive of NECO, during the council's 25th anniversary gala award night held in Minna.

NECO was created to provide a credible local examination body in response to longstanding demands for such an institution. The figure of 35 million candidates reflects cumulative participation in NECO examinations, including the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

The event also featured the presentation of a lifetime achievement award to Emeritus Professor Dibu Ojerind, who served as NECO's registrar from 1999 to 2007 and was recognized for his role in the early development of the council. Various states, including Bayelsa, Lagos, Ogun, Edo, Kaduna, and Oyo, were acknowledged for their performance in the SSCE.
