EgyptAir Cancels Hajj Flights from Mali Over Security Fears

EgyptAir has canceled its Hajj flights to Mali, directly impacting over 4,000 people as the country faces a dire security situation. The cancellations were announced on a Saturday, with the Malian government acknowledging the nature of the cancellations due to security concerns.

Mali is currently experiencing significant threats from separatist jihadist rebels, which have targeted the authoritarian junta. Last weekend, a large-scale attack resulted in the death of the country's Defense Minister.

The jihadists have begun blocking certain entry points to the capital, Bamako, leading to the flight cancellations. The rising costs associated with kerosene and the security situation have also contributed to this decision.

The cancellations affect nearly a third of Mali's total Hajj quota of 13,323 pilgrims. The allocation of Hajj permits is based on a lottery system, and discussions are underway to arrange for the affected pilgrims to depart under the best possible conditions.
