Illegal Kidney Harvesting Racket Worth $41 Billion Exposed in Nigeria

Professor Aliyu Abdu revealed that over 650 kidneys have been illegally harvested and transplanted in Nigeria, valued at $41 billion on the global black market. Abdu, a leading nephrologist, disclosed this alarming trend at a seminar on National Organ and Tissue Transplantation Standards in Abuja.

He highlighted the existence of a vast illegal organ trafficking network in Nigeria, with kidneys being a lucrative commodity. Despite laws criminalizing commercial organ sales, weak enforcement and regulatory gaps have allowed this illicit practice to thrive.

Victims, often driven by poverty and desperation, face lifelong health complications and psychological trauma. Abdu emphasized the need for stricter enforcement and awareness to combat this heinous trade.
