Parents Demand Safe Return of Abducted Children in Oyo

In Oyo State, parents of schoolchildren abducted by gunmen have rejected relief materials, including rice and cash, offered by government officials, insisting instead on the safe return of their children. The traditional ruler of Oriire Local Government Area, Baal Emmanuel Alad, recounted the attack during a video interview, describing how gunmen struck shortly after suspicious movements were observed.

The attack resulted in the abduction of several pupils and teachers, including Mr. Michael Oyedokun, a mathematics teacher who was killed.

Following the incident, Governor Seyi Makinde's team visited the community with relief materials, which were turned down by distraught parents. The abduction of 40 pupils and teachers on May 15, 2026, has triggered public outrage, leading to calls for intensified security measures.

President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards in Oyo State to enhance security. The Nigeria Union of Teachers has declared an indefinite strike in response to the situation.
