Oyo State Issues Heatwave Alert, Urges Precautions

Oyo State has issued a heatwave alert, urging residents to take necessary precautions as temperatures soar to dangerous levels, reaching highs of 41°C. Ademola Aderinto, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, issued this advisory on Monday in Ibadan, the state capital.

The alert follows a severe heat stress warning from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, which indicates that the rising temperatures are affecting several states across Nigeria. Aderinto advised residents to remain vigilant and adopt safety measures to protect their health, particularly during the peak dry season.

He recommended limiting outdoor activities between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM when the sun is at its peak and encouraged staying in shaded areas to reduce heat exposure. Proper hydration is emphasized, with a recommendation to drink at least two to three liters of water daily and consume water-rich foods.

Aderinto also warned against leaving children, the elderly, or pets inside parked vehicles, as temperatures inside cars can rise rapidly to fatal levels. The government reassured the public of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
